Epoxy Vinyl Ester Resins

Vinyl ester resins are produced by the reaction between an epoxy resin and an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid. One of their major advantages is that they offer better resistance to moisture absorption and hydrolytic attack than polyester. A vinyl ester skin between the gelcoat and the glass/polyester laminate or over the gel-coat, therefore tends to prevent the hydrolysis-induced osmotic blistering that fibreglass boat owners fear. Boat builder or owners retrospectively can incorporate this protection without having to go to the expense of using epoxy; though the latter constitutes an even more effective moisture barrier.

They are based on either bisphenol-A or novolac chemistry with methacrylic acid forming the polymer. Used extensively to produce corrosion resistant tanks, pipe and other components, vinyl ester resins have a higher resistance to corrosive chemicals and environments than regular unsaturated polyesters. For this reason, vinyl ester resins and vinyl ester blended with polyester are also used extensively in the marine industry to produce an effective water resistant barrier for boat hulls and other parts.
